Still no date for silencing of Kendal Town Hall bells

Still no date for silencing of Kendal Town Hall bells Still no date for silencing of Kendal Town Hall bells

A DATE on which Kendal’s town hall bells will historically fall silent overnight has still not been set.

As the Gazette exclusively revealed in August, they are due to be turned off between 11pm and 7am for the first time since the Second World War after complaints about ‘nuisance noise’.

The protests triggered an investigation which revealed sound levels were ‘unacceptable’ and in breach of environmental health laws.

But despite confirmation of the move nearly three months ago, the chimes can still be heard ringing out, as South Lakeland District Council has yet to establish when the silencing will take place.

A council spokeswoman said an engineer began assessing the work that needed to be carried out yesterday (Wednesday).

She added: “Due to the specialised nature of the work and the necessary parts that may have to be ordered, a completion date cannot be given at this time.”

It is unclear how much the project will cost the taxpayer.

I personally think that the person/s that complained about the bells should pay for it rather than those of us who don't mind the bells going. Are they going to silence the parish church bells as well as I've heard them go of early in the morning.

Find it ironic that on a Sunday there's a deafening noise on the high street which gets louder and louder the closer you get to the Town Hall, then you realise it's coming from The Rainbow.

You then wander round Home Bargains to hear the staff getting comments from customers about the appalling noise from next door

I would definitely like to know what percentage of my council tax is being used for this purpose - then I will either not pay it or send an invoice to the pub landlady who was the only person to ever complain, according to WG.

its just sour grapes from the folks at the rainbow- they knew about the bells when they took the pub on and are now **** and trying to impose their will on other people. maybe the shouldnt have got the pub in the 1st place

Oh let them ring, the proprietors of the Rainbow should foot the bill not the tax payer!

Ah, how good it is to see the brave Internet warriors out in force picking on people who are just trying to make an honest living in difficult times.Well done, keep at it, and when Kendal is a ghost town all you will hear are the bells ringing all night to remind you of the good times when there were off-comers to pick on!

I quite agree. Let the bells ring. The landlady of the Rainbow knew about them when she took the license on. Ridiculous. What about the air pollution being above limits in Lowther street ? There is nothing being done about that.
The council just picks and chooses which environmental laws to enforce.

Has a decible test been done on the church bells? I would like to know the difference between the two.
See the headlines now 'Grumpy's silence church bells across the country'.

"sound levels were ‘unacceptable’ and in breach of environmental health laws"

It's the law, get over it, it's not like its the end of the world. It's pretty clear that most of the people here are just using it to have a go at a pub they don't frequent:

don't get the wrong idea though, i'm not on this particular pubs side - if I had it my way, I'd whinge (like you guys, but) about all the pubs in kendal, yawnful, dull places playing terrible...terrible music.

I don't even know where this pub is, somewhere in the vicinity of the Town Hall I presume. What is annoying me is where the money is coming from to pay for the new equipment needed - my council tax, as well as everyone else's in South Lakeland.....

Meh, You're making it sound like we'll all be broke because a town bell mech has to be adjusted to comply with the law..I'm willing to bet its a minut drop in the ocean compared to repairs that get carried out all over kendal in places we probably don't give a jot about; I'm sure the cost of fixing will eventually come to light in the coucil's expenditures, if its even an amount worth publishing.
