A LAKE District mountain rescuer has been recognised for racking up 40 years of service.

Steve Kelley, of Kendal Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT), was presented with a 'long service award' by team leader, Eddie Harrison, at its annual meeting.

He joined the then Langdale Mountain Rescue Team in 1972, before moving to the Kendal base in 1980.

Mr Kelley, of Old Hutton, has been a vehicle and training officer in his time with KMRT, working his way up to deputy team leader.

He has also been a volunteer with the Clapham-based Cave Rescue Organisation.

Mr Harrison said only a few mountain rescuers throughout the country had volunteered for as long as Mr Kelley.

“I’m not aware of that many in the Lake District,” said Mr Harrison.

“It’s quite an achievement. He has been very committed.”
