MOUNTAIN rescuers went to the aid of stranded fell walkers during a busy day for three of the region’s teams on Saturday.
Langdale and Ambleside volunteers treated a man suffering from chest and stomach pains on the lower slopes of Silver How, Grasmere, at about 12.55pm.
The team relied on an air ambulance crew to pinpoint the man’s whereabouts as the caller’s mobile signal dropped out before they could give the rescuers a precise location.
He was given first aid at the scene before being airlifted to hospital.
Forty minutes later, members of Kendal Mountain Rescue, who were en-route to help, joined the Langdale and Ambleside team in helping a woman who had slipped on wet ground nearby.
She sustained a painful leg injury and was given treatment before being taken down the valley and onto hospital.
Then, at 3.50pm – and within minutes of returning to base – Kendal Mountain Rescue Team was paged by Cumbria Police to help an injured walker near Reservoir Cottages, Kentmere.
The walker was treated by the team’s doctor, driven to Kentmere village and taken to hospital.
Meanwhile, Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team was contacted by police who were concerned for two walkers reported stranded in a snow storm in the Slight Side area at around 2.20pm.
A spokesman for the team said: “Unfortunately their compass had fallen to bits and they were disorientated.
“Fortunately, by the time we phoned, the weather had improved slightly and they were able to walk off themselves after some directions.”
