MARJORIE Hope Metcalfe has celebrated her 100th birthday with a family get together, at Heron Hill Care Home.

Born in October, 1912, at Horse Market, Kirkby Lonsdale she has devoted all her life to her family and friends.

The eldest daughter of Richard and Maria Major, Mrs Metcalfe said she has always got more pleasure from giving rather than receiving.

In 1936 she married Bill Metcalfe, a businessman in Kirkby Lonsdale. The couple had three children and she dedicated her time to looking after the family and business until retirement. Always active, she spent many hours caring for and helping her brothers and sister, as well as many friends as an integral part of the local amateur dramatics group and Young Conservatives.

Mrs Metcalfe was widowed 35 years ago, she lost one son shortly after birth and her second son, Barrie, 24 years ago.

She continued to live independently, in Kirkby Lonsdale, until 2005, when she moved to Hartland House, Milnthorpe.

In 2009, she moved to Heron Hill Care Home at Kendal, which helped her celebrate her 100th birthday with a buffet.
