COUNTER terrorism officers are carrying out a series of raids in Cumbria this morning as part of the investigation into the death of a Northern Ireland police officer.

The North West Counter-Terrorism Unit and Cumbria Police say they are assisting Police Service Northern Ireland (PSNI) in executing 'a number of searches' in the county.

A PSNI spokeswoman said: "The search activity is connected to an ongoing PSNI investigation into the murder of PSNI Constable Ronan Kerr in April 2011 and linked incidents. There are no further details at this time."

The spokeswoman added that searches were also ongoing in the Omagh area on Northern Ireland.
