PROBLEM parking is being tackled in two Eden towns and a village with the introduction of new traffic regulations.

Cumbria County Council’s Local Committee for Eden approved plans for ‘No Waiting at Any Time’ restrictions on stretches of road in Appleby, Kirkby Stephen and Tebay to combat inconsiderate and obstructive parking.

In Appleby double yellow lines will be installed on both sides of Doomgate. The new restrictions will create passing places and prevent parking at inappropriate locations during peak traffic times.

Parking will also be prohibited on both sides of Station Road at its junction with Thanet Terrace and Westmorland Road to prevent problem parking near Appleby Primary School.

And a 40 metre length of existing ‘No Waiting 8am-6pm’ on The Sands will be extended to ‘No Waiting at Any Time’ to prevent vehicles regularly blocking access to the privately owned parking area adjacent to the Shire Hall.

In Kirkby Stephen ‘No Waiting At Any Time’ is being introduced on and around the Faraday Road/Silver Street junction. It follows concerns from residents that when the auction mart is in operation vehicles often obscure visibility by parking around the junction.

And in Tebay parking will be prohibited on a short eight-metre stretch of highway on the A685 Mount Pleasant in between the existing ‘No Waiting at Any Time’ restrictions and a bus stop. It is coming into force following concerns from the local bus service operator that vehicles parked in that short stretch of carriageway obstructed buses from pulling in to the defined bus stop.

Chairman of Eden Local Committee, Coun Martin Stephenson, said: “We have listened to local concerns about the problems caused by nuisance parking and acted on those concerns by introducing these new parking measures.”

Cumbria County Councillor for Kirkby Stephen, Coun Peter Thornton, said: “The changes we’ve brought into force - which were requested by local residents and the town and parish councils - will improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians and help traffic flow more easily.”
