'Snow and ice on way' - with warnings for drivers around Ambleside, Shap and Kendal
CUMBRIA County Council has in the last hour warned people to take extra care over the next 24 to 36 hours after the Met Office issued a yellow warning for snow.
Up to 10 centimetres is expected across the east of Cumbria tomorrow on ground above 300 metres. The authority also says Kirkstone Pass above Ambleside, and Kendal to Shap routes are at risk of disruption from ice, as well as trans-Pennine routes.
A widespread sharp frost is expected tonight with temperatures between -3C to -7C and the county council said anyone driving or travelling should be prepared for rain falling on sub-zero surfaces or surfaces re-freezing after the rain has moved on, leaving potentially treacherous road and pavement conditions.
Tomorrow morning, rain is expected in Cumbria with intermittent spells of sleet or snow, even at lower levels. It warns that the greatest risk of disruption to transport is liable to be across the eastern parts of Cumbria where up to 10cm of snow is possible on ground above 300m.
Further rain is likely during tomorrow night with more sleet or snow higher up and the possibility of some additional accumulation of snow, typically above 250-300m.
