AN ELDERLY couple were flown to hospital in two air ambulances after their car was involved in a collision on the A66 at Greta Bridge near Keswick this morning.

A spokesman for the Great North Air Ambulance said: "Initially, the Pride of Cumbria aircraft based near Langwathby was called to the scene but quickly assessed an elderly couple, who were trapped in the same vehicle, and called in the Guardian of the North for assistance.

"Both aircraft had doctors on board and after assessing and treating the patients they were flown in the helicopters to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough with back and limb injuries."

The couple were later said to be stable.
