Detectives are warning females to be extra careful when out alone in the dark after a woman was sexually assaulted in the early hours of this morning.

The attack, described as serious, took place in the Eskdale Drive area of Dalton-in-Furness at around 1am.

Although uninjured police said the victim was left distressed after being approached near to the junction of Langdale Avenue, and subjected to the assault.

The offender was described as being 5ft 7, of medium build, with curly cropped hair and facial stubble. He ran off in the direction of Langdale Crescent.

Barrow officers have advised that members of the public be extra vigilant, especially young women walking around after dark.

They encourage people to let someone know where they are going, and to be accompanied if at all possible.
