THE panoramic promenade at Kents Bank is the setting for a new art exhibition starting tomorrow (Saturday) which takes a timely look at the passing of one year and the start of another.
Called ‘Ending and Beginning,’ it runs at The Beach Hut Gallery in the station buildings overlooking Morecambe Bay at Kents Bank, from January 5 to February 28, between 11am and 5pm. The gallery is open three days a week from Friday to Sunday.
The latest exhibition features wood engravings, linocuts and paintings by artist Beverley White. It is described as signifying: “the passing of one year and, the beginning of the next.”
The Beach Hut Gallery opened in 2009 with support from The Co-operative which runs an initiative called ‘enterprise hub’ which helps get a number of community-run projects off the ground.
That made it possible for seven local artists to come together with a shared vision for benefitting others and supporting new talent from the gallery.
Inspired by the atmosphere and materials of the local bay environment, works at the gallery include; glass making; ceramics; printing; paintings and wood turning.
Maryport-based Co-operative and Mutual Solutions (CMS) is one of the main players in the Co-operative’s enterprise hub idea.
Dave Hollings, a director of CMS, said: “We are witnessing communities up and down the country, driven by needs other than to maximise profit, turning to co-operative solutions for the running of businesses and services.
“Enterprises such as this illustrate how by working together, communities can overcome many of the challenges currently facing our society, environment and economy.”
The Co-operative Group is the UK’s largest member-owned organisation with 7 million members and has committed a further £1million this year to developing the Co-operative Enterprise Hub service to provide the tools needed for member-owned enterprises across the UK to get off the ground or grow.
From pubs to post offices and retail to renewables, the free service has supported the creation and growth of 1,000 community-owned enterprises.
