POLICE are investigating an alleged sexual assault on a 16-year-old girl in Furness.

Officers in Barrow are making inquiries after an incident which occurred in the town on Sunday, January 6.

The alleged assault took place between 10pm and 10.30pm close to the top of the subway stairs opposite the main Post Office, on Abbey Road.

Police have appealed to three witnesses they believe were in the area at the time to contact them.

A 16-year-old male was arrested by officers this morning.

A Cumbria Police statement read: "Fortunately the victim, a 16-year-old local female has not sustained any serious physical injuries as a result of the attack but has been left distressed and is being supported by her family.

"A 16-year-old local male was arrested this morning on suspicion of sexual assault and is currently detained at Barrow police station assisting officers from the Public Protection Unit with the investigation.

"Police are keen to speak to three possible witnesses to the incident who may have been in the area at the time of the offence.

"These witnesses may hold important information and officers are appealing to a man described as in his 50s or 60s and two other males who are described as being about 16-years-old who were seen in the vicinity of Abbey Road to contact them as soon as possible.
