Wounded burglary suspect hospitalised after being arrested over two attempted break-ins in Bowness

AN alleged burglar suspected of causing £600 damage after trying to break into a commercial garage in Bowness was taken to hospital with a serious hand wound shortly after being arrested by police.

A large number of police officers including dog handlers were called to Rayrigg Road at 2.15am on Monday after a member of the public reported seeing suspicious activity in the garage.

Evidence of an attempted break-in, causing around £600 damage, was found after three windows within the garage were discovered smashed.

A Cumbria Police spokeswoman said a 'significant amount of blood' was located on scene which, she said, suggested the offender or offenders may have injured themselves.

A police dog then led its handler to a nearby caravan park where police located evidence of a further attempted break in at a caravan.

Police searched the area and located a 37-year-old man from West Yorkshire in the vicinity of Rayrigg Road at around 3.30am.

He was arrested on suspicion of burglary and attempted burglary and taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary for treatment for what officers said was a 'significant hand wound'.

He was discharged from hospital on Monday and released on police bail until February 11 pending forensic evidence as police inquiries continue.

He'll probably get a suspended sentence like everyone seems to do these days.

And why not if he is sorry for the damage he caused, promises never to do it again, and has had a difficult upbringing?

He probably only broke into the caravan to look for first aid!

He should have worn a gas mask as a disguise, and been apprehended by the public!

Oh please, I'll bet the only thing he's sorry about is getting caught.

Sorry - lack of a sarcasm smiley!!

I have no sympathy whatsoever for people who think it OK to steal from other people rather than make a living for themselves.
All too often I hear people saying they admire the east Europeans, who leave home and travel hundreds of miles, and are keen to work for their pay - and yet others begrudge them the jobs they are doing.
