Horse power aids peat bog rescue at Witherslack

The Celtic Horse Logging company at Savin Hill in the Lyth Valley
A PROJECT to restore a peat bog in the Lyth Valley is using serious horsepower to get the scheme moving.
Celtic Horse Logging, a company in Witherslack, has been brought in to help remove trees on the bog at Savin Hill.
Peat bogs are important to the environment for ‘locking in’ carbon, which helps reduce greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere.
Lowland raised bog is a priority habitat under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan and a habitat of principal importance – and Cumbria has most of the remaining bogs in England, all of twhich have been damaged in some way.
The trees are drying out the peat bog, which is affecting its ability to lock up carbon.
The Lyth Valley project is being run by the RSPB, the Source to Sea project – which aims to improve water quality around Morecambe Bay – and the Nature Improvement Area.
