THE number of people taking exercise in South Lakeland has risen more than eight per cent in four years, according to Sport England figures.

Nearly 39 per cent of residents took part in at least one session of moderate activity in 2012, up from 30.5 per cent in 2008 - the biggest jump in Cumbria.

More than 100 people have signed up to Lakes Leisure’s new ‘Get Active’ discount membership scheme at centres in Kendal, Windermere and Ulverston since its launch earlier this month.

Derek Jones, Lakes Leisure’s business and partnership development manager, said: “To have a marked increase in activity sessions in South Lakeland is very pleasing for the community as a whole and it shows how much importance we place on our health and well-being in this area.

“At Lakes Leisure we aim to provide a variety of activities to ensure that there are options for all ages and abilities to take part in and enjoy regular exercise in a friendly, welcoming environment. We want to help figures like this to continue to rise.”
