SOME bus services in Kendal will be affected from next week due to improvements taking place at the town's bus station.

On Monday, Cumbria County Council’s highways department are extending the footway on a bus lay-by in a project expected to take ten days.

It will involve widening the footway at the Blackhall Road bus stop, as well as relocating some bus shelters and street furniture.

Cumbria County Council said the changes have come following concerns being raised about the safety of bus users when using the waiting area.

The 555 Lancaster – Keswick service will now leave from outside Majestic Wine on Blackhall Road, rather than its usual place.

All other services (551/552 Arnside, 755 Morecambe, 530/531 Cartmel and 567 Kirkby Lonsdale) will leave from Kendal bus station.

Signs will be displayed at the stop to inform passengers of the changes.

The works have been part-funded from Cllr Geoff Cook’s Local Member’s Scheme budget - a sum given to fund different projects.

Cllr Cook, who represents Kendal Highgate, said: “We have spoken to bus users about the changes and they fully support the improvements."

"Wheelchair and pushchair users in particular feel that the current space is inadequate, so it’s fantastic that we’re able to extend the waiting space for these users.”

Cumbria County Council said it apologised for any inconvenience the works may cause.
