Work on Greenodd's £1.5 million roundabout scheduled for autumn start
11:21am Monday 4th March 2013 in News
CONSTRUCTION work on a £1.5m roundabout along the A590 at Greenodd near Ulverston is on course for an autumn start, says the Highways Agency.
The roundabout will replace the current junction layout and provide safer joining arrangements from the A5092 county council road.
The A5092 currently forms a T-junction onto the A590 with drivers having to pull into a gap in the central reservation to turn right to join the westbound A590 towards Ulverston. The gap also provides a right turn from the westbound carriageway onto the A5092.
Touring the A590 in September, Roads Minister Stephen Hammond pledged his support for the project and it was confirmed in October in a £30.9 million package of regional schemes – a second ‘tranche’ of the overall £317 million government investment and part of the Government's growth initiative outlined during the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement in November 2011 Site visits and some preparatory work have already begun and some advanced embankment work will begin in July. However, road users and local people are being advised that the construction work on the roundabout itself will not begin until September.
Andy Withington, the Highways Agency’s regional service delivery manager, said: “The roundabout project is on time and currently scheduled to start in the autumn as previously announced.
“However, we are aware that there is a lot of public interest in activities around the site at present related to various surveys and some preparation - but work on constructing the roundabout itself and associated roadworks affecting the A590 and A5092 won’t be starting until the autumn.”
Once the project proper has begun road users and local people will be able to view progress reports or sign up for email updates at www.highways.gov.uk/roads.
