UPDATE: Police charge 52-year-old Kendal woman with arson following flat fire on Highgate

POLICE have confirmed that a 52-year-old woman from Kendal has been charged, following a blaze which tore through a ground floor flat on Friday.

Sheila Greaves, of Marvic Court, New Inn Yard, off Highgate, has been charged with 'arson with intent to endanger life' after allegedly setting her own home alight.

She is due to appear in court tomorrow morning.

Police and fire crews were called out to the scene, in the centre of Kendal, just before midnight on Friday, amid reports that a ground floor flat in a three-storey building was alight.

They remained at the scene until the early hours of Saturday morning.

Two fire crews, including four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, used one hose reel and one main jet to extinguish the flames.

Around 10 residents in nearby flats were evacuated at around 1am and the adjoining properties were later searched to ensure the fire had not spread.

Ms Greaves will remain in police custody until her court hearing tomorrow.

DC Duncan Helm, of Kendal CID, said police are still keen to hear from anyone with information about the incident. They should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
