UPDATED: Rugby player airlifted to hospital during Kendal U19's game

A YOUNG rugby player had to be airlifted to hospital after being injured during a cup match in Kendal yesterday.
The unnamed player was taking part in a rugby match on the football fields of the Queen Katherine School, at around 3pm on Sunday March 17.
Theo Blackburn, under 19's coach for Kendal, said the player had complained of a sore neck after the scrum and protocol now required match officials to get medical treatment quickly.
Eyewitnesses said the player was initially treated on the pitch by doctors and then attending paramedics.
The North West Air Ambulance was also called to the scene.
The match was between Kendal Under 19s Colts and Fylde Under 19s based at Lytham St Annes. The player belonged to the Fylde team.
A spokeswoman for Fylde Rugby Club said this afternoon that the 18-year-old had suffered muscle damage but had sufficiently recovered to have been released from hospital.
The game moved onto the first team pitch and Kendal went on to win 15-10, setting up a semi-final with Marple Rugby Union based near Stockport.
