MOUNTAIN rescuers were called out after several motorists became trapped in snow.
Kirkby Stephen volunteers attended the incident, on Tailbridge Hill on the B6270, at its highest point before it descends into the Eden Valley, amid reports that an army lorry had skidded and was blocking the road.
Upon arrival at the scene, on Monday, they discovered another army lorry, a Land Rover and five other cars and vans, which had also become blocked in.
Seventeen members of the team responded.
A snow plough and JCB digger in were used to dig out the vehicles.
A spokesman for the team said: “This short stretch of road is a well known point, high on the Pennines, at which the B6270 is prone to blockage by snow, even when almost all the rest of the road is clear.”
