THACK Moor – a North Pennine peak 12 miles above Penrith – has been designated a mountain after surveyors found it was three quarters of an inch (2cm) higher than originally thought.
It pushes the fell over the 2,000ft mark that signifies mountain status by Ordnance Survey's (OS) definition.
OS has confirmed the measurements with its own analysis of the data supplied by enthusiasts, who measured the mountain twice using high-tech GPS equipment.
