UPDATE: Road traffic collision on A65 - police confirm identity of woman killed

POLICE have confirmed the identity of the woman killed in a car crash near Kirkby Lonsdale yesterday as Barrow resident, 73-year-old Marion Teresa Jones.

The incident, which took place shortly before 1.30pm, involved three cars. Another woman, from Longtown, suffered serious injuries and a male suffered minor injuries.

The collision, at Spital Farm, between Crooklands and Kirkby Lonsdale, closed the A65 for around five hours.

Paramedics were joined at the scene by police and firefighters, as well as the Great North Air Ambulance Service and the North West Air Ambulance Service.

According to a Cumbria police spokeswoman, two Volkswagen Golf cars, bring driven in opposite directions, 'clashed door mirrors' before becoming involved in a serious collision with an Audi TT.

Ms Jones, who had been driving one of the Volkswagen cars, died at the scene, while her male passenger suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

The male driver of the other Volkswagen did not suffer any injuries.

The female driver of the dark blue Audi suffered serious injuries and was taken by air ambulance to Preston.

A spokeswoman for Cumbria Police said: "Despite valiant efforts by police officers and passing motorists, who were all on the scene within moments of the collision occuring, and who immediately administered first aid and CPR, the driver of the first Volkswagen Golf, a woman from the Barrow-in-Furness area, tragically died at the scene."

A series of road blocks remained in place until 6.30pm, closing the stretch of the A65 between the Crooklands roundabout, at junction 36 of the M6, and Kirkby Lonsdale.

Is it not time we recognised a number of roads in the region are not fit for purpose?? The a65 is an absolute joke.. the disparity between the level of investment in the trunk roads and the dearth of investment in all others is criminal. Look at the b5278 flookburgh to haverthwaite... laughing stock and barely fit for a tractor... the a595 west coast route via millom.. all genuine death traps. A terrible, but avoidable death no doubt.RIP.

Worried about 'blade stall' being on the roads with that attitude. I drive that road regularly and have been driving it and the A590 for 23 years. I am happy with the state of the roads and my own driving, the only thing that worries me is other drivers — I drive to suit the conditions.

I think you are being rather insensitive. These comments are being made on a report of some poor lady that has lost her life in a sad accident irrelevant of the cause. If you want to make comments about bad driving surely some respect would be appreciated and they should not be made following such a report. Just a thought!!!

Best wait and see on this one - you don't often clash mirrors then go on to have a fatal accident.
If you know where this accident occurred, you would be puzzled as to how it could have come about, as there are worse stretches of road along this section.

I think it's very naive of magical trevor and ELBEAN to blame it on all on the drivers. Some roads are inherently more dangerous than others because of the severity of bends, dips etc. Not all are well sign posted, and if you are not familiar with a road I can envisage how one momentary lapse in concentration could lead to an accident. And let's be honest, none of us can say we concentrate 100% of the time when we are driving.

Quite - and Blade Stall made a valid point about the investment in those roads compared to traffic levels which DOES increase the chances of an accident however caused.
