A freak 'snow storm' led to several crashes involving more than twelve vehicles between junction 36 and 37 of the M6 this evening.

Police were called to the stretch of road, between Kendal and Kirkby Lonsdale, at around 6.55pm where accidents had occurred on both the north and southbound carriageways.

Although unable to release exact details, Inspector Matt Kennerley said one crash involved eight vehicles.

"It seemed that the accidents occurred due to the freak snow and hail storm and the subsequent lack of ability to brake," he said.

"The tailbacks caused more accidents further back but these were much more minor."

He added that luckily, injuries were not severe.

The road was closed for a short space of time while debris was cleared but has since re-opened.

Insp Kennerley said: "The weather can be a little unpredictable so please drive carefully."
