ALDI could be coming to Carnforth with plans for a store being submitted to Lancaster City Council.

The supermarket chain proposes to build a shop on the empty Norman Jackson Contractors site, next to Booths, in Scotland Road.

The store will create five full-time and 20 part-time jobs. It will also comprise a 58-space car park.

Town major Carolyn Higginson said she thought the plans would be well received.

“I think a lot of people from Carnforth shop at the ALDI in Morecambe anyway, so would welcome one nearer to home,” she said. “It’s a lot of jobs too, which is great.”

The only problem she anticipated was access, as customers would enter and exit the new car park on the same road as those shopping in Booths.

“I think this would be the only down side because it would mean there would be a lot more traffic trying to turn out of the car park onto the A6,” she added.

And local business owners seemed positive about the news.

Gordon Seward, who owns Carnforth Book Shop, on Market Street, said: “I am not a major fan of supermarkets but anything that will pull extra people into Carnforth is great because they then may look around the rest of the town. I have shopped at ALDI myself and like it, and it will give residents another choice of where to shop.”

Owner of Kiss the Bride, also on Market Street, Janice Ralph, added: “I am all for it. “I think that anything that brings in more people and creates jobs can only be a good thing, and it’s just what Carnforth needs.”

If the new ALDI gets the go-ahead, plans show it would open 8am to 9pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 6pm on Sunday.

Carnforth town councillors will discuss the application at their meeting on Wednesday, May 15.
