YOUNG people and members of the Windermere and Ulverston neighbourhood policing team have teamed up to complete an exciting £2,000 community project.

The policing team secured the funding to improve areas in Windermere, predominately around the recreational ground, thanks to funding from Britvic and management from Ground Work UK.

Officers worked with local school children on the project, building on work last October which included the planting of more than 6,500 daffodils, funded by United Utilities and The North West Royal Horticultural Society.

In total, more than 216 volunteer hours have been worked and more than 100 people have been involved in this community project, including youngsters from St Cuthbert’s School, Windermere School, Sandgate School, Kendal, ATC Windermere and John Ruskin School, Coniston.

Town councillor Lisa Greasley also played an important role in the project and provided advice on which bulbs and shrubs to plant.

PC Simone Backhouse, of the Ulverston and Windermere NPT, said: “This project has been a real success. It has given me a chance to engage with a selection of our young people from across the area through a simple but effective tool of engagement.

“The logistics and planning of the project to get some of the young people here has been at times quite challenging. But we have been able to overcome problems because everyone has shared resources to make it happen and make it successful. Next year we should be able to see the results which will benefit not only our local residents but also our visitors.

“It has been hard work and we have been hampered by the terrible weather. My thanks go to the young people and to the schools who have taken part and made it happen.”
