PUBLIC feedback shows strong support for proposals to build affordable homes on the site of the existing swimming pool at Berners Close, Grange over Sands.

More than 200 people attended an event at the nearby Victoria Hall organised by South Lakeland District Council, Grange Town Council and Two Castles Housing Association.

The event, which enabled those attending to vote for their preferred design, was part of an extensive consultation process to get the views of local residents and other interested parties. Most people were happy with the proposed designs with the vote producing a roughly even split between contemporary and traditional options.

The consultation also showed a preference for a natural, wooded, pathway with some easily-maintained interactive sculptures.

Some people expressed concern about parking and traffic and all views will be taken into account, alongside the results of a traffic impact assessment, before the final scheme is designed for the site, which is owned by SLDC.

The project is a partnership between SLDC, Grange Town Council, and Two Castles Housing Association. It includes affordable houses and flats as well as a green open space. A small part of the site, the former nursery site, will be sold on the open market to raise funds for the Lido.

Meanwhile proposals to demolish the existing swimming pool complex are being progressed by SLDC which will be tendering for a contractor to carry out the work as well as applying for Conservation Area consent. Demolition of the swimming pool is crucial for the completion of the Berners re-development.

The plans are in addition to the work that has already started on the construction of a new medical centre due to open in May 2014.
