POLICE have named a 76-year-old man who died following a collision on the Coast Road this morning.

He was Henry Morphet, of Bardsea.

Mr Morphet died at the scene of the accident which police say involved a red Vauxhall Corsa driven northbound towards Ulverston by a 22-year-old woman from the town.

She was said to be uninjured.

Both lanes of the A5087 - busy due to the good weather - were closed in both directions for five hours.

Motorists were diverted over Birkrigg but the road is now open.

Police were on the scene directing traffic and the attending emergency services included the Great North Air Ambulance.

The incident was reported at 10.04am. It happened close to The Olde Mill Function Rooms at Bardsea.

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC 1998 Mike Bolton of Ulverston Road Policing Unit by calling the non-emergency number 101.
