Stone Skimming Championships ready to make a splash
2:59pm Friday 16th August 2013 in News
THE official stone skimming championships for England get under way at Windermere on Saturday.
Hundreds of have-a-go holidaymakers and locals will be heading to the National Trust’s Fell Foot Park to compete in this most relaxing, yet competitive, of pastimes.
Competitors will be attempting to record the longest throw, within set lanes, with a minimum of three bounces or skips on the water before sinking.
Reigning champion in the men’s competition Ron Long will be taking to the shore to try and defend his title.
The stones used on the day will be collected by organisers, although skimmers will be able to choose their own ‘weapon.’
The contest’s official rules stipulate that these have to be no more than three inches in diameter and must be local.
The All England Open Stone Skimming Championships are organised by South Cumbria Rivers Trust as a fundraising activity for its conservation work.
