Run! The tide's coming in! Competitors face race against the tide at Muncaster Castle this weekend
7:00pm Wednesday 28th August 2013 in News
Muncaster Castle is hosting ‘Race the Tide’ this Saturday - an adventurous fell running competition with a twist.
The race will start as the sea comes in and creeps its way up the river Esk.
Competitors will race the tide and run over the Cumbrian fells to reach the ford at Waberthwaite before it floods with seawater.
They'll either beat the tide or get very wet, say the organisers.
The first crossing of the river will be over a rickety rope bridge - or competitors can swim it instead.
They then have to cross the “Bog of Despair” before facing a steep climb through ancient oak woods and over rough moorland to reach a local folly known as the “Pepperpot”.
It sits on the skyline opposite Muncaster Castle and gives superb views to the Isle of Man and beyond.
The final challenge will be running up the steep cannon bank that defends the ancient castle to the applause of the crowd, which will have been watching the runners on key stages of the route.
Ewan Frost-Pennington, of Muncaster Castle, said: “This is a great celebration of the wild, robust and stunning landscape of the Western Lake District and runners will be pitting themselves against boggy moor and mountain, river and tide. It’s certainly a fell run with a twist”
After the race, competitors, their friends and supporters are encouraged to stay for a party with up-and-coming band “King Eider”, a bar and a hog roast.
Camping is available overnight in Muncaster’s gardens.
Two courses are available for the runners; the “Classic” at around 13 Km (8 miles) is not for the faint-hearted, and the shorter yet equally testing “Vintage” which is around 6Km (3 ¾ miles).
Tickets are £15 for competitors, including the hog roast and the party. Non competitors can join in the celebrations for £5.00.
