Sir Bradley Wiggins confirmed as team leader in Tour of Britain
11:23am Thursday 5th September 2013 in News
SIR Bradley Wiggins has been confirmed as the leader of Sky Pro Cycling for the Tour of Britain - which races through the Lake District later this month.
'Wiggo' became the first Britain to win the Tour de France following success last year and his participation is likely to boost the profile of the already much anticipated event.
The tenth anniversary of the tour gets underway on Sunday September 15 and travels through the Lakes the following day in a gruelling 186.6km stage from Carlisle to Kendal - finishing on Beast Banks.
The elite riders will begin in Carlisle before travelling through Aspatria, Maryport and Whitehaven.
The riders will then wind their way through Buttermere, Keswick and Grasmere before powering up the notorious uphill finish up Beast Banks to Greenside, which last featured as a finish in 2007.
Olympian Wiggins will be joined by fellow British riders Josh Edmondson and Ian Stannard plus Australian Mathew Hayman, Austrian Bernhard Eisel and Spaniard David Lopez in the six rider line-up.
"We are very pleased to welcome Sir Bradley Wiggins back to The Tour of Britain alongside what looks to be a very strong Sky line-up,” said Race Director Mick Bennett.
Elsewhere, sprinter Mark Cavendish, who won three stages of the Tour last year, will be leading the Belgian team Omega Pharma Quickstep.
