IF you are out and about on Helvellyn tomorrow do not be alarmed if you spot a children’s TV character powering up the mountain.

That is because seasoned hiker Steve MacDonald, of Glenridding, is taking to England’s third highest mountain dressed as Spongebob Squarepants.

The 47-year-old Tesco worker is raising money for Diabetes UK; the superstores’ chosen charity partner for 2013.

“I was looking for a silly fancy dress outfit for a night out in Durham when I seen this Spongebob outfit and decided it would be a good challenge to climb Helvellyn in it,” he said.

“Weather dependant, my intention will be to climb from the Thirlmere side heading up from Swirls at 9am and head up to Lower Man then onto Helvellyn summit.

“I will spend maybe a couple of hours between Helvellyn and Dollywaggon Pike should any walkers wish to be there and get a photo at the tops with me in the outfit.

“I will then drop down into Patterdale for refreshment and then head back home to Glenridding where I will finish in the Travelers Rest public house at between 4pm and 5pm.”

Steve will be carrying a donation bucket on the day should anyone wish to donate.
