POLICE in Kendal are urging motorists to be patient during tonight’s Kendal Torchlight Carnival procession.
Torchlight begins at 7pm and the route runs around the town centre opposite to the normal one way system with a number of roads closed from 6.30pm.
The roads are expected to reopen at approximately 10.30pm.
Sergeant Paul Mellard, of Kendal Police, said: “To avoid delays and diversions, we would ask motorists to avoid driving into the area or attempting to leave the town during these times.
“There will be a large numbers of people walking around the town and their safety is paramount. “I hope that residents will be patient and cooperate with the temporary closure and make alternative arrangements in advance because the road closure will only be lifted for emergency service vehicles. “The roads can only be reopened when they are clear of participants and spectators.”
Roads that will be closed are: • Burton Road from Oxenholme Road • Natland Road from Rinkfield • Lound Road • Nether Bridge • Aynam Road • Miller Bridge, New Road, Stramongate • Blackhall Road • Sandes Avenue • Stricklandgate • Highgate • Kirkland • Milnthorpe to Glebe Road • Romney Road • Romney Bridge
