Burneside Brass Band off to Cheltenham to play in national brass band finals
5:14pm Thursday 19th September 2013 in News
TWENTY-seven members of Burneside Brass Band are heading off to Cheltenham this weekend to play in the National Brass Band Finals.
It is the first time the band has qualified for the finals in its 20 year history.
The players, aged 24 to 70, have spent around 60 hours together practising the test piece - A Malvern Suite - set by the competition organisers. They also rehearse individually putting in as many hours again.
“We will be judged ‘blind’” explains band spokesman Dave Higson. “To remove any suggestions of bias the panel sits in a box not knowing which band they are listening to.
“We won’t know when we are playing until Saturday afternoon. If we are last on the list to play it could be as late as 10.30pm.”
Nineteen Fourth Section bands from around the country will be competing for title of Champion Band 2013 National Brass Band Champions Section Four.
The 20th anniversary year has been a busy one for the band too on the fundraising front. They are hoping to raise £80,000 to build a band room in Burneside to encourage the next generation of local brass band players.
Under musical director Laurie Johnston, Burneside Brass Band qualified for the national finals by coming second in the Northern Area Championship earlier in March with the piece ‘Devon Fantasy’. Also at the area championship, Burneside’s solo Euphonium player David French won the Ralph Bell Memorial Trophy.
Qualifying for the national finals has confirmed Burneside Brass as being one of the top 20 Fourth Section Brass Bands in the UK.
Burneside Brass was formed in March 1993 by two local men, Peter Crawford and Bill Turton. Mr Crawford, now band president, still plays on the front row of the cornets.
