Barrow-built nuclear-powered submarine to be officially named today
10:37am Friday 20th September 2013 in News
THE third in a series of Barrow-built powerful attack submarines will officially be named today.
Astute Class submarine, Artful, will be named at a special ceremony at Devonshire Dock Hall at BAE Systems.
The occasion marks the end of Artful’s build programme - moving it one step closer to joining sister vessels HMS Astute and HMS Ambush in the Royal Navy fleet.
Audacious and Anson, the fourth and fifth of the nuclear-powered submarines, are also under construction.
The keel for sixth in line Agamemnon was laid in July while plans for Ajax are in the pipeline.
Thousands of guests are expected to turn out to see the 7,400 tonne, 97 metre long attack submarine named.
