THE WESTMORLAND Gazette's Driving Hospice Care appeal is already more than one- fifth of the way to its £36,800 target thanks to generous local people.

A total of £8,153 has been raised for the campaign set up to help buy 4x4s for Hospice at Home nurses, who care for terminally-ill locals who have chosen to die at home.

“The nurses are overwhelmed with the response,” said Catherine Butterworth, head of fundraising at St John’s Hospice.

The money includes two donations of £1,000 each and several of £500.

“We have been really fortunate this week to receive a couple of individual donations of £1,000, which is extremely generous – but each and every donation we receive is very much appreciated,” she said.

The money is needed for a pair of brand new Kia Sportages to help the team get across South Lakeland, north Lancashire and north Yorkshire toreach to patients.

New cars are to be provided at a reduced cost by Windermere’s Rayrigg Motors.
