Councillors and residents join forces to develop Appleby Horse Fair strategy
8:56am Thursday 26th September 2013 in News
COUNCILLORS and residents from across Upper Eden have joined forces to develop an area wide strategy to manage the annual influx of visitors to the Appleby Horse Fair.
Cumbria County Councillor Libby Bateman asked each parish to nominate a representative to a working group to develop a strategy for the management of the horse fair across Upper Eden.
The group has held its first meeting where problems were identified and solutions put forward. The next step is for the group to meet with representatives from the Multi Agency Strategic Coordinating Group (MASCG) and the Police and Crime Commissioner later this month.
Coun Bateman said: “The MASCG has done an excellent job of managing the fair over the past six years, but this management has only applied to pockets of heavy disruption and this has pushed problems into other areas.
“It is essential that we work together to develop a whole area strategy for the commotion caused by the fair which costs the tax payers of Eden over £150,000 each year. I would like to see some innovative ideas about how visitors can help to pay towards the cost of the fair.
Kirkby Stephen Town Council Chair, Joan Johnstone said: “There were some difficulties in Kirkby Stephen in 2013 in the two weeks before the horse fair in Appleby and I welcome this effort from the parishes of Upper Eden to set the priorities for the management of the fair in 2014.”
