Two men stopped on M6 at Lambrigg plead guilty to being drug couriers
2:39pm Tuesday 1st October 2013 in News
TWO men stopped on the M6 at Lambrigg near Kendal have admitted being drug couriers.
Ross Michael Malone, 31, of McNeish Drive, Brydekirk, near Annan, and Gary Irvine Latimer, 34, of North Street, Annan, were arrested when police found the drugs after stopping their car as they headed back to Scotland on July 20 last year (2012).
At Carlisle Crown Court today the pair both pleaded guilty to possessing two drugs – cocaine, which is categorised as a class A substance, and cannabis, which is class B – with intent to supply them.
They did so on the basis – which the prosecution had no evidence to disprove – that Malone acted agreed as a courier “under an element of pressure” from drug dealers to whom he owed money, while Latimer had agreed to help him.
They were remanded on unconditional bail for background reports and will be sentenced on November 1.
By then the prosecution will have decided whether to pursue action under the Proceeds of Crime Act, to make them pay back any profits they made from the enterprise.
