Furness General Hospital moves to appoint top medical director at Trust

A long serving doctor at Furness General Hospital has been appointed to a top director post.
Dr Gill O’Connell, has worked at FGH for nine years, running the anaesthetic service.
She now becomes associate medical director - part of the new management structure.
The Trust says sees clinical leaders at the forefront of designing, managing, improving and being accountable for clinical services.
As the one of the most senior doctors in the Trust, the purpose of the director is to provide strong and effective medical leadership and advice about the hospital.
The major responsibilities include: governance, clinical performance, safety, education and training (including continuous personal development and appraisal systems.
Dr O’Connell, said: “I am pleased to have the opportunity to serve the hospital in this capacity, and look forward to working with colleagues and patients to provide high quality care.”
George Nasmyth, Medical Director, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Last year we announced plans to put our doctors, nurses, midwives and allied health professionals in charge of our clinical services. The purpose of this was to make sure that decisions about the services we offer were made as close to patients as possible, by the people who treat them every day.
The Trust also has another associate medical director, Dr Sue Harding, who provides the leadership for medical staff at its two other main hospitals – the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and Westmorland General Hospital.
