ACTRESS and director Victoria Wood will unveil a plaque to mark the completion of Hawkshead Market Hall’s Diamond Jubilee Project tomorrow night.
The three-stage project has achieved extensive modernisation and refurbishment of the historic building.
The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Project has provided new kitchens for both floors of the hall, new lighting and improved heating, new curtains and chairs and full external and internal redecoration. Safety improvements include a fire alarm system, new signage, an audio-loop and non-slip surfaces.
The cost of the project, approximately £60,000, has been met by generous support from community institutions, some utilisation of reserves and increased revenues as the hall has become more attractive to hirers.
Commenting on the completion of the project, Market Hall Trust Chairman Tom Macan said: “The Market Hall is a central feature of Hawkshead and one that is used extensively by all sectors of the community from the Stage Society’s annual panto to a weekly coffee morning for seniors.
“The trustees are delighted to have brought this project to a successful conclusion and given the village a Hall fit for the 21st century. It is a fitting way to mark Her Majesty’s 60 years of service.”
Hawkshead Market Hall is a Grade II listed building by the Kendal architect Francis Webster dating from 1790. It was enlarged in 1887 to mark Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee.
Victoria Wood has close personal links with Hawkshead. “Housewife 49”, a stage adaption of her television play set in Barrow is currently running at the Old Laundry Theatre in Bowness.
The plaque unveiling will take place at 7pm.
