'Pigeons were her best friends' - community moved by death of Kendal's 'Bag Lady'
THE funeral of a woman affectionately known as 'Kendal's Bag Lady' takes place next Tuesday.
Sylvia Barbara Stevens was a familiar face in the town centre - transporting a multitude of bags of belongings containing clothes and her lifetimes possessions.
In the worst of weathers, she could be found taking shelter or sleeping rough in its ginnels and yards - mostly around Highgate.
Although she opted to live on the streets, a couple of years ago she was provided with accommodation by concerned staff at South Lakeland District Council.
It followed several harsh winters of snow and freezing temperatures.
Living alone, it is believed she passed away at her accommodation in Windermere, aged 78, on September 26.
Neighbours have reported not seeing her for some time while heartfelt memories of her have flooded into The Westmorland Gazette and its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/westmorlandgazette
Helen Tindall wrote: "In the last few years she has been a regular shopper in the store where l work, sorry to hear the news."
While Francesca Holly Shewan added: "Glad she lived her last years in the comfort of her own home."
Others have told of buying her food and described her as a 'lovely caring lady.'
A friend called Andrew, who spent a time living rough, also befriended Sylvia. He described how she was was a 'god-fearing' woman who was very 'pleasant and warm'.
He said: "Pigeons were her best friends and I think she's gone to the nice place."
Kendal's Hayes and Parkinson, which is handling the funeral, said this week: "Unfortunately no relatives have been traced and the service will take place at Parkside Road Cemetery."
It happens on October 8 at the Parkside Road cemetery from 11am.
