7ft Star Wars fan hopes to be the next Chewbacca

A 7ft 3in tall Star Wars fan has applied to be cast as Chewbacca in the upcoming Disney films.
Jonny Mathers, 34, responded to an advert from casting agency Spotlight calling for a ‘Male, 7ft to 7.3ft tall with a slim/thin build and upright posture’.
The former Lakes School pupil, who now lives in Weston-super-Mare, has no professional acting experience but said he had been a fan of the sci-fi films ‘from the time I could walk’.
“My mum and dad used to go crazy because I used to watch them all the time, and as I got older I think it just got worse,” he said.
It was Jonny’s parents John and Sylvia, of Broadfield, Troutbeck Bridge, near Windermere, who told him about the casting call after hearing it on the radio.
John said: “We thought of him straight away because he’s been a fan of the films since he was three years old.
“If he had an opportunity to get any part in one of these films it would be a dream come true for him.”
In just two weeks his Facebook page ‘Get Jonny in Star Wars: Episode VII’, has received over 2,000 likes and he has appeared in an article about casting rumours on an American film website.
Jonny said: “It started as a bit of a joke and then went completely crazy – I’ve gone from being an ordinary bloke to appearing on Hollywood news.”
Plans to make three new Star Wars films were announced by Disney last year after buying creator George Lucas’ film company Lucasfilm.
The character of Chewbacca is a ‘Wookiee’ and has been played by giant British actor Peter Mayhew, 69, in four of the previous films.
The seventh film in the franchise is currently being casted by director JJ Abrams and is due for release in 2015.
