Cyclists: don't make it easy for thieves, say police
4:01pm Thursday 10th October 2013 in News
CYCLISTS who post their routes to social media sites are being warned to use privacy settings to deter thieves.
Police believe burglars are actively using Strava or Garmin Connect devices to locate homes where high value bikes may be stored.
“These devices record a cyclists route from start to finish and then publish the information to social media sites,” explained a police spokeswoman.
“This can give thieves the chance to pinpoint where your home is if your route starts and finishes at the same place.”
However on a Strava account it is possible to set up a 500 metre ‘exclusion’ zone around the cyclist’s home.
“Police are recommending that Strava users take advantage of this setting,” continued the spokeswoman.
Anyone with information regarding thefts of bikes is asked to contact Cumbria Police on 101.
