Brewers head to Staveley for beer competition
FINAL preparations are being made for Cumbria’s biggest beer competition.
Almost 200 casks and 85 bottled beers aredue to arrive at the Hawkshead Brewery, Staveley, on Thursday, where this year’s Society of Independent Brewers North West (SIBA) regional competition and festival will be held.
Thousands are expected to descend on The Beer Hall from October 24 to 26, including staff from 15 county breweries.
They will be joined by around 50 other brewers, coming as far as Lancaster, Macclesfield, Merseyside and Blackburn, who have entered their finest ales into the showcase with the hope of securing one of the 13 titles.
Chairman of SIBA north, Greg Bolton, said: “The competition is a great opportunity for the region’s breweries to show off what they can accomplish, not just for festival visitors but also among their peers, demonstrating the phenomenal work and passion that goes into creating good cask ale.
“The effort that has gone into organising the competition and festival is tremendous and we’re looking forward to welcoming both beer enthusiasts and new visitors to the event.”
Gemma Greenbank, of the Hawkshead Brewery, said: “We're pleased that the success of our own festivals have been recognised by SIBA, so much so an event that previously took place in Manchester has been moved to the Lake District.
“This is great, not just for us, but for every other Cumbrian brewery and reflects the strength and vibrancy of the Cumbrian brewing industry.”
The overall winner of the competition will secure a place on the bar of the brewers’ society’s national BeerX event in 2014, plus the chance to supply JD Wetherspoon and Punch Pub Co.
And it is not all for those hoping to take home a crown. Following the competition all the tipples will be available for festival visitors to try throughout the three days, while stocks last, with up to 100 on pull.
