Calls increase to NSPCC helpline from Cumbria
4:16pm Monday 21st October 2013 in News
THE NSPCC says it is receiving more reports of children suffering from abuse or neglect in Cumbria.
Last year, the charity’s helpline dealt with 959 reports about children in the Cumbria and North East region, many of whom were under five years old.
Cumbria has seen a 13 per cent in referrals from 143-162 since last year.
Charity bosses say it does not mean that cases are increasing, but more are being reported.
John Cameron, head of the NSPCC helpline said it was encouraging that people feel a responsibility for vulnerable children.
“We urge the public and professionals to continue to act on their instincts when they feel something could be wrong, and not wait until they are certain.”
Anyone worried about a child can contact the NSPCC on 0808 800 5000, text 88858 or email email@example.com 24/7. Calls can be anonymous.
