South Lakes appeal to help raise cash for little Ruby's cancer treatment in Germany

A SOUTH Lakes woman is planning to run for 12 hours on a treadmill to help save the life of her cousin’s young daughter.
Jennifer Pearson, from Staveley, aims to raise cash for Great Ormond Street Hospital and also raise awareness of the Ruby Thompson Appeal so the three-year-old can be given groundbreaking cancer treatment in Germany.
Jennifer will carry out the treadmill run at Asda in Kendal on November 30 with the support of a host of local people, including Kendal Ladies’ football team.
Ruby, from Maidenhead, Berkshire, was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma in 2010, when she was 11 months old and the disease had paralysed her.
“We were told that she only needed a small amount of chemo and she was in remission by February,” said Jennifer.
“But after an MRI scan early in January our worse fears were confirmed - it had come back. This time it was in her bones, her chest, spine and neck.”
The devastating news meant Ruby faced months of treatment, including chemotherapy, surgery, stem cell harvest, radiotherapy and immunotherapy. But the cancer came back again before this was completed.
“All treatment was stopped,” said Jennifer. “We are now in a position where the NHS has nothing else to cure her with; they can only provide palliative care. That’s why we’re looking to raise £20,000 for alternative therapies in Germany.”
These would boost her immune system and detox her organs, said Jennifer. “Our aim is to give her the best chance of survival,” she added.
Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron also plans to join the treadmill run, which takes place at Asda on November 30 from 7am to 7pm.
