Cumbrian hair stylist shortlisted for national award

A CUMBRIAN wedding hair stylist who worked with Usain Bolt in a TV commercial has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award scheme.
Katie Coward, who is originally from High Newton but now lives in Hackney, has been chosen as one of the final 10 hair stylists narrowed down from hundreds of entries for the hitched.co.uk Breakthrough Awards.
The 26-year-old has worked as a freelance hair and makeup artist for more than eight years and has worked for some of the biggest names in fashion and TV - with Usain Bolt taking the number one spot in the ‘Bolt vs London’ Visa commercial released for the Olympics in 2012.
“You can’t beat working with the fastest man in the world, although he didn’t have much hair to work with,” Katie said.
“There were other people in the commercial, and I was responsible for hair and make-up. Usain has a fun, cheeky personality, he was lovely.”
Katie, who graduated from the London College of Fashion after a three year foundation course in hair and make-up, decided to begin a career in wedding hair styling after her sister’s wedding four years ago.
“Everyone seemed to be getting married at the same time and I did the hair and make-up for my sister and just loved the atmosphere.
“I began to build up my contacts with brides-to-be and received some great feedback for my work, so I knew it was for me.”
Katie also co-owns a wedding stationary company 'The Teacup Workshop' with her sister Jennie which launched earlier this year.
