Cumbria fire fighters on strike tonight
4:26pm Friday 1st November 2013 in News
FIREFIGHTERS from Cumbria will strike tonight as part of an ongoing dispute over pensions.
Members of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) will walk out between 6.30pm and 11.30pm on Saturday.
The union also plans to strike from 6pm to 8pm on November 4.
Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) is asking people in the county to minimise the risks of fire and avoid making unnecessary 999 calls.
The strike means CFRS will be operating a reduced emergency response when industrial action takes place.
While 999 calls will continue to be answered as normal, CFRS' response to incidents where life is considered to be in danger will be prioritised.
Cumbria County Council says the service will be stretched, but they have enough on-call fire fighters to keep people safe.
Although the service will try to attend all emergency calls, on occasion some incidents where life is not considered to be at immediate risk such as small fires and automatic fire alarms may receive a reduced or even no response.
