Cumbria county councillors to vote on whether to pay compensation over waste probe failing
2:56pm Sunday 3rd November 2013 in News
CUMBRIA County Council is to vote on whether to pay compensation to a Furness resident over its failure to carry out a prompt an investigation into an illegal waste site in 2010.
The Local Government Ombudsman examined a complaint against both the county council and Barrow Borough Council over their failures to deal with unauthorised use of land at Schneider Road, Barrow, for processing waste and storing scrap and other materials.
A report from the Ombudsman found evidence of maladministration against both authorities.
It recommended that Barrow BC should pay £4,500 and Cumbria CC £3,000 to the resident, who had to endure noise, smoke and dust from the site for a prolonged period. The report also recommended the authorities should each pay £250 for the complainant's 'time and trouble'.
In the county authority's case, the Ombudsman's report said it had not carried out an adequate investigation when the matter was reported to its officers.
The Ombudsman's report and recommendations will be debated by the full county council on Thursday.
