REVIEW: Glenn Tilbrook at Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal

Squeeze singer Glenn Tilbrook entertained for more than an hour and a half on Friday night - and gave the clearly knowledgeable audience pretty much every song they wanted to hear.

He opened with Is This Love and other Squeeze favourites soon followed, including Take Me I’m Yours and Some Fantastic Place, interspersed with songs he’s recorded as a solo artist.

Tilbrook was engaging company - amusing, self-depracting, full of anecdotes and playing tribute to fellow Squeeze song-writer Chris Difford.

It’s always interesting when singer-songwriters talk about songs that have inspired them. Tilbrook played an excellent version of Witchita Lineman and, perhaps suprisingly, a faithful version of Jimi Hendrix’s Voodoo Chile, including at one stage playing part of the solo with the guitar behind his head.

But the biggest cheers came when he played Squeeze classics such as Tempted, Labelled With Love, Up The Junction, Another Nail In My Heart and Pulling Mussels (From The Shell) - suddenly everyone was back in the eighties, although these songs stabnd the test of time.

Special mention should also go to support act Leslie Mendelson, from New York, who has a great voice and whose songs were both catchy and poignant.
