A Dales bus scheme which allows young people to travel for £1 has been highly commended at the UK Bus Awards.

The One Way £1 initiative – spearheaded by the Dales Integrated Transport Alliance (DITA) – was selected as one of seven finalists in the Putting Customers First category.

Judges described it as an innovative scheme that improved young people’s access to work, social and leisure opportunities in a rural area.

“We are very happy to have received this important recognition for our work to make transport more accessible to young people in the Yorkshire Dales,” said DITA chairman Helen Flynn.

The initiative – which has been extended until April – proved a huge success over the summer, with the number of young passengers more than doubling.

Similarly, revenue from under-19s climbed from £8,200 a month to £14,300.

The scheme allows young people aged under 19 to travel on buses for £1 on weekdays after 5pm and during weekends and school holidays at any time. The operators are Dales & Bowland, Dales & District, Pride of the Dales, Transdev and The Little White Bus.
