Furness man's solo sweep bags 14 sacks of litter
12:12pm Wednesday 4th December 2013 in News
A FURNESS man collected 52kg of discarded beer cans and coffee cups during a voluntary solo litter pick on a country road.
Peter Howlett, of Pennington, spent three days collec-ting rubbish along a four-mile stretch of the B5281 from Ulverston after seeing the rubbish that had built up during a cycle ride.
He said: “That stretch of road seemed bad and the things I have collected are all things that people have thrown out of car windows rather than from fly-tipping.”
During the litter sweep he collected 14 bags of drink cans, coffee cups, sweet papers, plastic bottles and sandwich packages.
Mr Howlett said: “Much of it had clearly been there for a long time and it was a mucky job.
“I went back a few days later and saw a few things had already been left – so in a few weeks it will go back to being as bad again.
“It’s a shame that irresponsible people do this.”
